Mortal Shell 2 Night Mode: Gloom-bound Flame and What Changes

Night Mode starts when you take the Gloom-bound Flame to the Marrowkeep roof. Enemies get harder, rewards rise, and a short list of night-only places opens.

How to turn Night Mode on

Current for the launch version.

Pick up the Gloom-bound Flame after the prologue, carry it to the lantern on the Marrowkeep roof, and confirm the switch. That is Night Mode. It is not an Options checkbox, and it is not locked in forever.

Thestus on the Marrowkeep roof, holding the lantern that switches Night Mode

The same lantern turns the night off. Use this page for the walk and the known extras. Use the difficulty guide if you only needed the hard-versus-easy split.

Where the flame is

The flame sits in the first open-world field after you leave the keep.

  1. Finish the prologue at Marrowkeep.
  2. Walk out to Widow’s Overlook, the first open-world beacon.
  3. Drop down the right-hand side toward the Great Arbiter of Flesh.
  4. Take the Gloom-bound Flame from the pillars in the middle of that field. You do not have to kill the Arbiter to grab it.

If you already beat the Arbiter, the flame is still the item that matters. Bring the candle home. The Arbiter’s other drops are a separate errand.

Light the keep roof

  1. Fast-travel or walk back to Marrowkeep.
  2. Take the elevator all the way up.
  3. Find the small lantern on the left at the top and place the flame.
  4. Confirm the prompt. Thestus appears with the lantern and Night Mode turns on.

The world goes darker. That visual change is the confirmation you did it, not a second quest.

What Night Mode changes

ChangeWhat you noticeWhy it matters
Enemy pressureHits hurt more and enemies live longerTreat this as the hard toggle
RewardsMore Gloom and gold from killsThe trade for the extra danger
Map extrasA short list of night-only placesCheck them while the lantern is lit
ReversalThe same roof lantern turns it offYou are not stuck

Stay in day until Seals and a first Shell feel stable. Night Mode is available early; that does not mean it is the first-hour plan.

Known night-only places

These four are the documented extras. They are not a promise that the list is finished.

PlaceHow you reach it at nightWhy go
Garrick’s DenThe dungeon left of the tutorial parry beaconGloom coins
Mushroom-village dungeonAcross the bridge beside the villageA first-person dungeon that opens at night
Forgotten TowerThe tower on the map once night is upThe giant takes three glands for Seedbearer’s Scripture
Night merchantAppears after the lantern is litUnique Tarstones and crafting goods

Do not skip the merchant if you are already collecting stones. The rest can wait until you want the extra route.

How to turn it off

Ride the Marrowkeep elevator again and talk to Thestus. Night Mode returns to standard day. You can light it later when a build can take the extra hits.

Common mistakes

  • Fighting the Arbiter first and missing the flame. The candle is on the pillars.
  • Leaving the flame in the field. The lantern is on the keep roof, not at Widow’s Overlook.
  • Assuming Night Mode is permanent. The same lantern reverses it.
  • Treating four night places as the full secret list. More may exist; these are the ones on record.

Frequently asked questions

How do you activate Night Mode in Mortal Shell 2? Take the Gloom-bound Flame from the first-beacon field to the lantern on the Marrowkeep roof.

Does Night Mode disable achievements? No. The achievement warning belongs to the Slayer Seal, not to the night lantern.

Can you turn Night Mode off? Yes. Use the same roof lantern.

Do you have to kill the Great Arbiter of Flesh? No. The flame can be taken from the pillars without finishing that fight.

Is Night Mode the same as Hard Mode? Yes in practice. It is the documented harder toggle, not a New Game menu row.
