Mortal Shell 2 Best Tarstones: First-Hour Pickups
First-hour Tarstones with a documented pickup: Wounding, Acolyte, Auspicious, Emberseed, Volatile Fragment, Siegebreaker, and Retribution. Not a complete tier list.
What “best” means on this page
Current for the launch version.
These are first-hour stones with a documented pickup, not a ranked list of all 75. Rank rules stay on tempering. Locked weapon gems stay on infusions. Duality has its own tomb route.
Support, Combat, Infusion, and Ability stones sit in different slots. A demonstration loadout held ten stones at once. You are not choosing one “best gem.” You are filling jobs.
Take every unused stone to rank two. That step pays a Tar core. Rank three spends those cores. Stop at rank two on stones you will not wear.
| Stone | Job | Documented pickup | Why it is on this list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wounding Stone | Combat; melee applies perforation | Stone coffin under wooden scaffolding on the opening grass | First Combat stone on the Tiel route |
| Parasitic Stone | Combat; leech stacks on kill | Same pool-area stop as the Obsidian Lathe | Sustain while you farm |
| Acolyte’s Stone | Ability; spend Resolve on a charged light | Merrick’s Tarstone tab after selling a marsh pearl | Shop stone with a named input |
| Auspicious Stone | Support; melee critical chance | Mushroom Village after the candle offerings | First Support crit stone |
| Emberseed Stone | Infusion; sidearm shots can burn | Cleanse the candle shrine beacon in Mushroom Village | Early element without a late dungeon |
| Volatile Fragment | Kills can explode | Cleanse Mushroom Village Gate | Crowd clear on the same village run |
| Siegebreaker’s Stone | Support; ranged stagger | Chest through the wall past that gate | Sidearm break setup |
| Retribution Stone | Support; extra riposte after a break | Found in the gray fog on that same early run | Pairs with Siegebreaker |
How to spend ranks
- Deliver the Etching Needles to Franz.
- Equip the stone you want and fill its bar on a Gloom loop.
- Pay gold for rank two. Keep the Tar core.
- Push rank three only on stones that stay socketed. Infusions can become permanent there.
Acolyte’s charged light wants spare Resolve. Auspicious at rank two is already the crit-chance stone this page uses; the tiny rank-three bump is a core sink. Parasitic leech hits a heal cap quickly, so rank two is enough for the opening.
This URL is not a ranked list of every stone. Dual-wield players who want Duality should leave this table and open that page.
Opening pickup order
- Inhabit Tiel on the opening route so the rest of the walk is faster.
- Grab Wounding from the scaffolding coffin and leave it equipped.
- Take the pool-area detour for the Obsidian Lathe and Parasitic.
- Sell a marsh pearl to Merrick and buy Acolyte’s Stone if you want the charged light.
- Finish the Mushroom Village candles for Auspicious, then the shrine and gate cleanses for Emberseed, Volatile Fragment, and Siegebreaker.
Gorf near the first beacon is one documented pearl source. Do not turn that into the full Gorf quest.
Common mistakes
- Ranking stones before Franz has the needles. The bar will not cash in.
- Spending six cores on a 3% crit bump. Rank two Auspicious is the opening stop.
- Forcing every Combat stone onto one weapon. The stone must list that weapon type.
- Calling this the Duality page. Duality is a tomb chest, not a village gate.
