How do you unlock Smert?

Current for the launch version.

Fill three blood pools, then inhabit Smert the Apostate. Each pool knocks you out of your current Shell and stays filled once the blood is in. You do not need a perfect run. You need three fills.

An easy approach starts at Gloomshade Grove after you already have Eredrim. If the Outskirts beacon is already open, the pickup is around the corner from that beacon.

What Miracle does

ToolWhat it doesWhy you pay the health
MiracleSpend half health to halt time and enter a fight stanceYou want a freeze window, not a starter dodge
ChaosUnarmed hits in that window inflict Chaos, which detonates when time resumesThe freeze has to pay for the missing health
OvertimeSpend more health to keep Miracle runningYou are extending a freeze, not starting a new one
Deadly RevelationAt 10% health or lower, Smert has FaithThe low-health state is part of the kit

This is a high-cost body. Do not treat it as a first-hour Shell. Get Proxima or Tiel first.

Route from Gloomshade Grove

  1. Cleanse enough corruption to stand at the Gloomshade Grove beacon. The same grove unlocks Eredrim.
  2. Run past the citadel.
  3. Cross the bridge.
  4. Use the warp gate. It has two exits. Take the left exit, not the upper one.
  5. At the three blood pools, step into a pool. You leave your Shell and that pool fills.
  6. Beat nearby enemies until you can call the Shell back.
  7. Repeat until all three pools are filled. A filled pool stays filled.
  8. Inhabit Smert.

A later ranking that puts this kit at the top of a list is still a later opinion. This page only records the freeze and the pools.

What not to skip

Do not start the pools in the base body if you still need a first-hour Shell. Do not abandon a half-filled set; the blood does not reset. Do not hunt this pickup before you can reach Gloomshade Grove.

Ability unlocks for this named Shell go through the Shellkeeper at Marrowkeep. Shell points refund. Glimpses do not.
