Where to Go First in Mortal Shell 2

Go from Marrowkeep to Widow's Overlook, Black Ridge Pass, and Proxima without turning the opening route into a full walkthrough.

8/21/2026 Last updated: 8/21/2026
The player runs uphill through ruined stonework on the opening route.

After the prologue reaches Marrowkeep, make Widow’s Overlook your first open-world anchor. From there, take the left ramp and bridge to Black Ridge Pass, cleanse its beacon, continue uphill into the Shattered Beacon, and claim Proxima. This is the shorter of the two nearby routes to an open-world Shell and the cleanest place to stop before choosing your next objective.

Before the open world: take the actuator

The route has one important action before Marrowkeep. Inside the first beacon encounter, open the chest and collect the actuator. Later, give it to Franz at Marrowkeep to enable his weapon-upgrade machine.

Do not trade that guaranteed progression item for an optional detour. If you already have it, there is nothing else to solve here: finish the prologue and continue to the hub.

Use Marrowkeep as the handoff point

Marrowkeep marks the end of the prologue and the beginning of your route choice. It is the place where early progression systems meet, not the destination you should spend the whole first session circling.

Do three things before leaving:

  1. Confirm that the actuator is in your possession and hand it to Franz.
  2. Keep Untarnished Seal as your safe learning tool unless you already understand the other defensive risks.
  3. Leave with one goal: reach Widow’s Overlook and claim an open-world Shell.

The beginner guide explains why this order works. Continue below for the travel sequence itself.

From Widow’s Overlook to Proxima

Use these directions as one short route rather than a checklist of side activities:

  1. Start at Widow’s Overlook.
  2. Take the left ramp.
  3. Cross the bridge to Black Ridge Pass.
  4. Cleanse the Black Ridge Pass beacon.
  5. Continue uphill from the beacon.
  6. Enter the Shattered Beacon and claim Proxima.

Do not turn this stretch into an early combat test. The purpose of the route is to reach a Shell before taking unnecessary fights. Once Proxima is claimed, the route has done its job.

If you want Tiel instead

Tiel is the nearby alternative from Widow’s Overlook. That separate route passes the dungeon and wooden structures. The nearby boss and ordinary enemies can be bypassed before you interact with the Shell.

Choose Tiel when you prefer evasion: a correctly timed dodge puts Tiel into Shadow and adds stagger to the response. Choose Proxima when your priority is simply the shortest documented pickup. The first Shell guide compares the two without repeating this route step by step.

Where this opening route ends

Stop treating the game as a route problem once you have:

  • reached Marrowkeep;
  • collected and delivered the actuator;
  • activated Widow’s Overlook as your landmark; and
  • claimed Proxima or Tiel.

Your next problem is combat execution, not navigation. Learn the defensive choices in the parry timing guide, then open the first boss guide when you want a fight-specific plan. Save the full walkthrough for a later point when you actually need a region-by-region route.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I go after reaching Marrowkeep? Use Widow’s Overlook as your first open-world anchor, then follow the Black Ridge Pass route to Proxima.

Should I get Proxima or Tiel first? Get Proxima for the shorter nearby route. Get Tiel if you prefer an evasive Shell whose timed dodge enters Shadow and adds stagger.

Do I need to fight the boss near Tiel? No. The boss and ordinary enemies on that approach can be bypassed until after you have the Shell.

What should I collect before leaving the prologue? Open the first beacon encounter’s chest and take the actuator. Franz needs it to enable weapon upgrades at Marrowkeep.

When should I start the first boss? After you have an open-world Shell, access to weapon upgrades, and a defensive input you can use deliberately. The dedicated boss page should guide the fight itself.
