Mortal Shell 2 Best Early Weapons: Iconoclast, Then the Axes
Start with The Iconoclast. Unlock Axe and Dagger at the Shrine of Trials, then take Veteran's Battle Axe from The King's Crypt if you want a heavier early swing.
Which early weapons should you take?
Current for the launch version.
Keep The Iconoclast, then pick up Axe and Dagger, then Veteran’s Battle Axe if you want a heavier swing. Those three cover the opening. A full ranking of all eight melee weapons is a different page.
The first common unlock starts at Mushroom Village. A merchant can sell location tips for the rest of the set. Tips mark a pin. They do not explain a moveset or which infusion belongs on the weapon.
| Early pick | Where it is | Take it when |
|---|---|---|
| The Iconoclast | Already in the Weapons tab after the prologue | You want a usable two-hander immediately |
| Axe and Dagger | Shrine of Trials after a hidden key near Mushroom Village | You want the first dual-wield unlock |
| Veteran’s Battle Axe | The King’s Crypt, north through Black Ridge Pass | You want a heavy early axe and will walk a trap dungeon |
The Iconoclast is the starter, not a placeholder
On-screen inventory spelling is THE ICONOCLAST. It is a light two-hander you already own. Do not drop it just because a later weapon has a louder pickup.
Lights end in a one-two if you socket the matching combat stone. Heavies go thrust into an overhead. The running heavy is a wide golf swing. The starter is also one of the weapons that can take Bloodcurse. Once an enemy is cursed, a hit aimed at you can stagger that enemy and make it hurt itself.
Upgrade it at Franz after the first-beacon actuator. Infusion ranks live on the infusions page.
Axe and Dagger: hidden key, then the shrine
This is the first weapon most runs actually hunt. Start at the Mushroom Village Beacon, go right, and cross the bridge. The archway past that bridge is illusory. Walk through the statue, take the Chapel Key, and return to the Shrine of Trials. That lock is also on keys.
Clear the shrine. The dual blades are at the end, not on the statue.
Duality Stone is the combat socket that changes this weapon. Each of the three base light hits becomes a paired strike. Only two melee weapons can use that stone; this is the early one. Infusions shown for it are Bloodcurse or Serpent Stone (Poison).
Veteran’s Battle Axe: north, then the crypt
On-screen spelling is VETERAN’S BATTLE AXE. Go north from the opening woods to Black Ridge Pass, then into The King’s Crypt.
The crypt is a trap dungeon: spikes from the floor, arrows from the walls. The axe is the clear reward, not a side chest on the way in. The running heavy is the swing that carries this weapon. A throw on the unique knocks a target back if you need space.
This axe can take curse blood. It is also the early place a permanent burn infusion shows up, before later curse stones. Use burn until you have the curse socket you want.
What this page does not pick
Great Martyr’s Blade, Obsidian Hammer, Axatana, Black Needle, and Clockwork Scythe are later jobs. Their routes sit on best weapons. Sidearms are a different inventory tab. Their first hunts sit on sidearms. Upgrades still start with the Obsidian Lathe on the weapon upgrades FAQ.
Common mistakes
- Leaving Mushroom Village without the illusory-archway key. The shrine stays shut.
- Treating The Iconoclast as dead weight. It is the starter and a curse weapon.
- Walking into The King’s Crypt like an open field. The traps are the dungeon.
- Waiting for a southern late weapon before Franz. Upgrade what you are holding.
