Mortal Shell 2 seals change the defensive input. Start on Untarnished, unlock Infinite at Marrowkeep, use Vatra to Harden, and pick Slayer for sidearm sustain.

What Seals do

Current for the launch version.

Mortal Shell 2 seals decide what happens when you press the defensive input. They are equipment, not a menu difficulty. The four early Seals that are documented here are Untarnished, Infinite, Vatra’s, and Slayer.

There is no single best Seal for every fight. Untarnished is the one to learn on. After that, pick the job you need: a fallback guard, a high-risk parry, Harden, or sidearm sustain.

The parry timing page teaches the shared impact cue. The Harden page is only Vatra. This page is the hub: which Seal does which job, and when to switch.

SealWhat the input doesMiss or early costWhy you equip it
UntarnishedHold to block; press near impact for a Perfect GuardEarly input still becomes a normal guardLearning timing without giving up safety
InfiniteParry near impact; can cancel your own attackNo fallback block if you missMore break once you already see the hit
Vatra’sHold to Harden the next hit; Perfect Harden refreshes the meterEarly Harden spends the recovery meterStay in an attack and still stone a hit
SlayerSidearm hits add break; a riposte restores health and ResolveIt does not replace a defensive fallbackA sidearm-led loop, not a starter guard

Which Seal should you use first?

Untarnished. Hold it while you learn an enemy. Press early and you still block. Press near impact and you Perfect Guard, which deals break and can open a riposte. It cannot cancel an attack you have already started, so leave room in your own string.

Do not start on Infinite just because it deals more break. Finish the parry training at Marrowkeep to unlock it, then switch only on attacks you already understand.

The beginner guide puts Untarnished in the first hour. Come back here when the question is “which Seal for this job?” rather than “what do I do in the opening hour?”

Infinite, Vatra, or Slayer?

Use this as a job pick, not a ranking.

If you need…EquipLeave it when
A guard you can hold while learningUntarnishedYou can already read impact and want more break
A tighter parry that cancels attacksInfiniteYou still need a block when the read is wrong
A stone that can interrupt a swingVatra’sYou want a normal guard more than Harden
Break and sustain from sidearmsSlayerYou are still learning the defensive input itself

Infinite is the parry Seal. It can cut through your current attack and deals more break when it lands. Miss, and the hit is a hit. Details of the practice loop stay on parry timing.

Vatra’s is the Harden Seal. Hold it to stone the next hit. Time it at impact and the Harden meter refills at once. You can play the whole game without it. The full loop is on Harden.

Slayer is not a safer Untarnished. It pays off when you already create a break with a sidearm and finish that opening with a riposte. Equipping it shows a warning that achievements will not count. That is the easy-mode cost, not flavor text. The full split lives on difficulty.

How to get Infinite Seal

Complete the parry training at Marrowkeep. Unlocking it early does not make it the right first Seal. Learn the contact point on Untarnished first.

If Infinite is missing after you reach the hub, the training is the check. Do not assume you need a new Shell, a boss kill, or a weapon upgrade.

Weapon upgrades are a different system: the actuator goes to Franz. See weapon upgrades.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for a universal best Seal. The useful pick is the job in front of you.
  • Equipping Infinite before you can read impact. More break does not help a missed parry.
  • Treating Vatra as an upgrade that replaces guard. Harden is one job, not a better Untarnished.
  • Using Slayer as your first learning Seal. It rewards a sidearm loop, not a first guard.
  • Chasing a millisecond window. Learn the strike reaching you, the same cue on every Seal.

Frequently asked questions

What are Mortal Shell 2 seals? They are the equipped tools that change the defensive input. The four early ones documented here are Untarnished, Infinite, Vatra’s, and Slayer.

What is the best Seal in Mortal Shell 2? Untarnished while you learn. After that, Infinite for a committed parry, Vatra’s for Harden, and Slayer when you lead with a sidearm.

Which Seal is the parry Seal? Infinite. Untarnished can Perfect Guard, but Infinite is the high-risk parry with no fallback block.

How do you get Infinite Seal? Finish the parry training at Marrowkeep.

Can you play without Harden? Yes. Stay off Vatra’s. That choice is a Seal swap, not a menu setting. See Harden.

Does Slayer replace Untarnished? No. Slayer feeds a sidearm-and-riposte loop. Keep Untarnished until that loop is the plan.

Does Slayer disable achievements? Yes. The Seal warns you before it equips. That is the documented easy-mode cost.
