Mortal Shell 2 Difficulty: Night Mode and Slayer Seal
Mortal Shell 2 has no simple difficulty slider. Night Mode is the harder toggle. The Slayer Seal is the easier combat option and it turns achievements off.
How difficulty actually works
Current for the launch version.
Mortal Shell 2 does not give you a New Game difficulty menu. The documented hard path is Night Mode. The documented easy path is the Slayer Seal at Marrowkeep. Harden is a combat Seal, not a difficulty setting.
If the game feels too hard or too easy, change one of those two items. Do not hunt for a hidden Options slider that the current evidence does not show.
| Option | What it does | Cost | Why pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default / day | Standard enemy pressure and rewards | None | Learn Seals and the opening route first |
| Night Mode | Enemies hit harder and live longer; Gloom and gold go up | You have to fetch the Gloom-bound Flame and light the keep roof | You want a reversible hard toggle |
| Slayer Seal | Sidearm pressure plus health and Resolve on a finished break | Achievements and trophies stop counting | You want an easier combat loop and accept the warning |
The harder path: Night Mode
Night Mode is an item, then a lantern, then a toggle.
- Leave the prologue and reach the first open-world beacon around Widow’s Overlook.
- Take the Gloom-bound Flame from that first-beacon field. It sits near the Great Arbiter of Flesh; you can pull it from the pillars without finishing that fight.
- Return to Marrowkeep, ride the elevator to the roof, and place the flame in the lantern.
- The keeper of night and day lets you switch Night Mode on. You can switch it back.
Enemy damage and health go up. Rewards go up with them. The switch is not permanent. Full pickup notes and the night-only places sit on the Night Mode page.
The easier path: Slayer Seal
The Slayer Seal is on a throne in Marrowkeep, the first hub after the prologue. Equip it and the combat loop gets kinder: sidearm hits add break, and finishing that opening restores health and Resolve.
That kindness is paid for. The Seal shows a warning that Steam achievements and trophies will not count while it is equipped. Treat that warning as part of the choice, not as flavor text.
Slayer is still a Seal. It does not replace Untarnished as the first learning tool, and it does not turn Harden on. Use it when you want sustain from a sidearm loop and you are willing to pause the achievement list.
What is not a difficulty setting
- Harden spends Vatra’s Seal to stone one hit. It is optional combat, not Easy Mode.
- A later Shell changes the body you wear. It does not flatten the whole game.
- Weapon upgrades at Franz make one weapon stronger. They are not a world-difficulty toggle.
If you only needed the easy/hard split, stop here. If you need the Night Mode walk, open that page next.
Common mistakes
- Looking for Easy / Hard in Options. The documented switches are an item and a Seal.
- Leaving Night Mode on by accident. Ride the keep elevator and turn it back.
- Equipping Slayer and then wondering why achievements froze. The warning on the Seal is the reason.
- Calling Harden Easy Mode. Harden answers one hit. Slayer is the achievement-gated sustain option.
Frequently asked questions
Does Mortal Shell 2 have a difficulty setting? Not as a New Game menu. Night Mode is the hard toggle. The Slayer Seal is the easy combat option.
How do you turn on Easy Mode? Go to Marrowkeep, take the Slayer Seal from the throne, and accept that achievements stop counting.
How do you make the game harder? Take the Gloom-bound Flame to the lantern on the Marrowkeep roof and turn Night Mode on.
Can you switch back? Yes. Night Mode reverses at the same lantern. Unequip Slayer if you want achievements again.
Is Harden Easy Mode? No. Harden is Vatra’s Seal. It does not disable achievements and it does not change world difficulty.
