Is Mortal Shell 2 out yet?

Yes. Mortal Shell 2 released on August 20, 2026, and it is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. There is no waiting list and no staggered regional rollout to plan around — the official site marks the game as available worldwide.

The game is titled Mortal Shell II on storefronts. It is the same game people search for as “Mortal Shell 2”, so if a store page shows the Roman numeral, you are in the right place.

How to start playing

  1. Pick your platform. The PC version is sold on Steam. The console versions are sold through the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store. Progress does not carry between them, so pick the one you intend to finish the game on.
  2. Choose an edition. There is a standard edition and a more expensive one that adds a cosmetic skin set. Nothing in the paid upgrade changes combat or progression. See editions and prices before you buy.
  3. Clear the disk space. On PC, Steam lists 70 GB of available space in its minimum requirements, and it lists an SSD as required rather than optional.
  4. Check your hardware first if you are on PC. The minimum specification is higher than the first game’s. Full requirements are on the platforms page.

Do you need to play the first game first?

No. Storefront copy describes Mortal Shell 2 as a standalone sequel, so it is built to be understood without the 2020 original. Playing the first game gives you context for the setting and a head start on the combat rhythm, but it is not a prerequisite.

If you are coming in cold, start with the beginner’s guide rather than the original game.

What kind of game is it?

Mortal Shell 2 is a single-player action RPG built around possessing the Shells of dead warriors, with combat that has no stamina bar and rewards breaking an enemy’s posture before striking. The world is an interconnected open world that the developers describe as deliberately compact.

If you are trying to work out whether it will feel like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, that comparison has its own page: is Mortal Shell 2 a souls-like?
