Mortal Shell 2 How to Level Up: Gloom, Glimpses, and Stones
Leveling in Mortal Shell 2 is four sinks. Gloom drops on death. Glimpses deepen a Shell. Shell points move. Tarstones rank at Franz after the bar fills.
What “level up” means here
Current for the launch version.
Mortal Shell 2 does not have one shared level bar. Gloom is the pile you drop on death. Glimpses deepen a Shell and do not come back. Shell points on that Shell’s tree can be moved later. Tarstones fill their own experience while equipped, then rank at Franz.
If you came here from a farm search, stop after this table and open Gloom farming. This page is the spend map.
| Sink | What it grows | Where it is handled | What you lose if you waste it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gloom | The run’s main combat resource | Dropped on death; recover the pile | A second death deletes the pile |
| Glimpse | Shell bond / memories | Shellkeeper at Marrowkeep | Glimpses do not refund |
| Shell points | That Shell’s talent tree | Same Shellkeeper desk | Points can be moved; Glimpses cannot |
| Tarstone XP | One equipped stone’s rank | Franz after the Etching Needles | The bar caps until you pay the rank |
How Gloom works
Gloom is the resource you pick up from enemies. Die and the pile stays on the ground. Reach it before you die again or it is gone.
If the pile sits in a bad spot, a ranged shot can collect it. That is the documented recovery trick after a fall, not a second farm.
There is no documented Options slider and no named “level vendor” beyond the sinks in the table. Do not hunt for a hidden character-sheet NPC that the current evidence does not show.
How Shells get stronger
Talking to Sester in the outskirts can deepen the bond on the Shell you are wearing now. Named-Shell ability unlocks still go through the Shellkeeper at Marrowkeep. Those are two desks. Do not collapse them.
Spend Glimpses only on a Shell you will keep wearing. Take one or two bond steps on the first-hour body so an ability unlocks, then stop if you already plan to switch. Tiel and Proxima are the early pair. Later bodies sit farther apart.
How Tarstones rank
A Tarstone starts at rank one. Fight with it equipped and its own bar fills. Rank two costs gold at Franz after that bar is full and yields a Tar core. Rank three spends cores from other stones you already took to rank two.
Bring unused stones to rank two for the cores. Only push rank three on the stones that stay in the loadout. Infusions can become permanent at rank three. Full unlock rules stay on the temper page.
Gold is often the bottleneck for weapon upgrades at the same machine. Sell junk to Merrick. Do not blow the purse on maps you will not read that hour.
Common mistakes
- Treating Gloom, Glimpses, and Shell points as one wallet. They are three rules.
- Expecting Glimpses to refund. Only Shell points move.
- Ranking Tarstones without the Etching Needles. Franz will not take the stone yet.
- Leaving a Gloom pile after a cliff death. Shoot it if you cannot walk back.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I spend Gloom? Recover the death pile first. The documented sinks around that resource are Shell investment and the rest of the run. There is no second named Gloom clerk on this page.
Is there a level cap? No cap is documented. The hard limits are Glimpse count, Tar cores, and gold.
Does farming Gloom replace this page? No. Gloom farming is the loop. This page is what the loop is for.
